Lucy Simon at Secret Garden Opening Night

The cast and crew of BTC's beautiful Fall Ensemble production of The Secret Garden were thrilled to welcome Lucy Simon, composer of the show, to their opening night performance on Friday evening, November 18.  Ms. Simon graciously offered to host a discussion and "Talk Back" session with the cast and audience immediately following the performance.

With the students seated around her on the stage, Ms. Simon spoke glowingly of the performance she had just witnessed and then responded to several questions from cast members and audience.  She gave the students very personal insights into her early experiences and the development of her career in the performing arts, her sources of inspiration and motivation, some personal insights into the music of The Secret Garden, and even a bit about her new musical, Zhivago, that opened this past summer at the La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, California.

Ms. Simon received Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations for the show when it opened on Broadway in 1991, as well as a Grammy nomination for the recording of the score.  She is also the recipient of two Grammy awards for her In Harmony albums, which she co-wrote and produced.

Coincidentally, the performance offered Ms. Simon an unexpected opportunity for a reunion with acclaimed actress Alison Fraser, who created the role of Martha in the original 1991 Broadway cast of The Secret Garden.
